Dimmer Switch Installation in Northern Virginia | Expert Installation

Challenge

A family in Vienna had switched every bulb in their 4-bedroom colonial to LED, but the original incandescent dimmers caused persistent flickering, buzzing, and dead zones in the dimming range. The dining room chandelier buzzed audibly at any dimmed setting, making dinner parties uncomfortable.

Solution

AJ Long Electric replaced 18 dimmer and toggle switches throughout the home with Lutron Caseta smart dimmers. Each dimmer was matched to the specific LED bulb load on its circuit. We installed a Lutron Smart Bridge for whole-home control and configured scenes for morning, evening, entertaining, and movie watching.

Challenge

The homeowner's open-concept living and dining area had recessed lights controlled by two 3-way switches at opposite ends of the room, but neither switch had dimming capability. The all-or-nothing lighting was too bright for TV watching and too harsh for dinner, but the 3-way wiring configuration confused a handyman who attempted the upgrade.

Solution

We installed a Lutron Maestro 3-way dimmer at the primary switch location and a matching companion dimmer at the second location, giving full dimming control from either end of the room. The LED-optimized dimmer was matched to the existing 12 LED recessed lights for smooth, flicker-free performance across the entire range.

Challenge

A couple with opposite sleep schedules needed independent lighting control in their master bedroom. The husband read in bed while the wife slept, but the single overhead light with a toggle switch was an all-or-nothing proposition. They also wanted nightstand lighting that could dim to near-zero for middle-of-the-night navigation.

Solution

AJ Long Electric installed a Lutron Caseta dimmer on the overhead recessed lights and added two Caseta lamp dimmers for the nightstand lamps. We programmed a bedtime scene that turns off the overhead light and dims one nightstand lamp to 5% for reading without disturbing the sleeping spouse.

Challenge

An avid entertainer's kitchen and formal dining room had recessed lighting and a chandelier, but all were on basic toggle switches. The kitchen was uncomfortably bright during dinner parties that spanned both rooms, and the dining room chandelier had no dimming capability despite being the room's centerpiece.

Solution

We installed four Lutron Diva LED dimmers -- two for the kitchen zones (task and ambient) and one each for the dining room recessed lights and chandelier. Each dimmer was individually calibrated for its circuit's load, and we installed matching Claro wallplates throughout for a cohesive designer look.
